Area of activity
Reduction of communal pressure in the Pilica catchment
Reduction of communal pressure in the Pilica catchment
Objective
Rural areas, due to dispersed housing development, are a challenge to reduce the pressure from sewage management on water resources. Communes, responsible for proper water and sewage management, do not have the appropriate tools for integrated management, which, apart from records, would allow for control and would facilitate the decision on issuing permits and undertaking new investments. As part of the LIFE Pilica project, financial and substantive support was directed to communes located within the Pilica catchment area to organize water and sewage management.
Activities within the theme
Supporting local government units in the development of planning documentation for water and sewage management solutions in areas outside agglomerations in the Pilica catchment
The action implemented under the LIFE Pilica project is addressed to local government units (JST) in areas that have not been designated as agglomerations within the meaning of the Wastewater Directive. In the first place, local government units will receive support in the form of 10 functional and utility programs for villages and 41 new or updated concepts of long-term development of water and sewage management. The development of uniform documentation for all communes of the catchment will allow for cost estimation and setting priorities in ordering water and sewage management. The next step will be to help municipalities obtain financing for investments from other sources, which will translate into reducing the pressure related to water and sewage management.
Product:
Preparation of documentation for water and sewage management solutions in the areas of communes for which no agglomerations have been designated within the meaning of the sewage directive.
Development and implementation of the Decision Support System for wastewater management in rural areas in the demonstration catchment
The Act of July 7, 2022, amending the Water Law Act and certain other acts (Journal of Laws of 2022, item 1549) increases the obligations of municipalities in the field of recording, controlling, and reporting on the operation of septic tanks and household sewage treatment plants. As part of the LIFE project budget, Pilica was able to finance an annual subscription for 50 communes from the Pilica catchment area for a comprehensive application for recording, controlling, and reporting on the operation of septic tanks and household sewage treatment plants, including an application for catchment stations. Part of the funds will be used to adapt the drainage stations to the application that allows for the control of sewage delivered from the sewage treatment plant. In the following years, it is planned to develop the component "Management of wastewater treatment plants in the catchment area" based on information from catchment stations.
Product:
Support for municipalities in the purchase of a subscription to a comprehensive application for recording, controlling, and reporting on the operation of septic tanks and household sewage treatment plants.

My role in this area of the LIFE Pilica project is to seek substantive and expert support for municipalities for effective wastewater management in rural areas. It is also a promotion of tools for recording and monitoring sewage delivered to communal authorities from the Pilica catchment area.
