Area of activity
Adaptation of cities to climate change

Objective

We will review the current needs of cities in terms of adaptation to climate change, with particular emphasis on the water management sector, including rainwater drainage systems. The review will be based on existing documentation and stakeholder interviews. Then, based on this information, plans for adapting cities to climate change will be developed for these cities. The plan will be a strategic document, the implementation of which should result in better water management in cities and facilitate obtaining funds for investments in adaptation measures. In addition, it will contribute to the reduction of the direct discharge of pollutants from municipal sewage systems to the waters of the Pilica catchment, in particular in the case of extreme rainfall events, which will occur more often in this part of Poland. It will also increase local stormwater retention in cities.
Under this theme, we are also demonstrating blue-green infrastructure in each city and ecohydrological biotechnology to demonstrate support for local stormwater retention and treatment (source control approach). The activities will be monitored in terms of their effectiveness.

Activities within the theme

Development of Urban Adaptation Plans to climate change for the water management sector in urbanized areas

In the demonstration cities: Koniecpol, Opoczno, Piotrków Trybunalski, Sulejów and Włoszczów, stakeholder platforms will be created - Municipal Teams (ZM), consisting of representatives of local governments, water management infrastructure operators, local specialists, social partners and others. ZM will work together with FPP experts on Urban Adaptation Plans (MPA) and their subsequent implementation. The Ministry of the Environment in the "Adaptation Manual for Cities - Guidelines for the Preparation of the Municipal Plan for Adaptation to Climate Changes" defined the methodology for preparing MPA. The implementation of the MPA will consist of the following stages:
- the creation of stakeholder platforms (City Teams) in each city
- modeling of sewage systems
- climate and economic analyses
- development of urban Adaptation Plans to climate change
- support for cities in the process of implementing urban adaptation plans.

Product:

Development of urban Adaptation Plans to climate change along with a cost-benefit analysis and support for cities in the process of their implementation.

Demonstration implementation of rainwater management solutions in the Pilica catchment

Activities in the LIFE Pilica project are aimed at promoting solutions based on nature, overcoming barriers to their implementation, and overcoming the skepticism of residents and authorities. Demonstrative implementations of ecohydrological biotechnologies developed at the ERCE PAN will serve this purpose. These are also activities in the field of blue and green infrastructure, a wide range of which FPP Enviro Sp. zoo owns. Their experience gained in the implementation of previous projects will be used in implementations presenting the use of blue-green infrastructure and sequential sedimentation and biofiltration systems for rainwater management in urban areas.

Product:

Design documentation and implementation of blue-green infrastructure and sequential sedimentation and biofiltration systems for rainwater management and increasing water retention.
